St. Matthew NIDA is engaged in the process of mobilizing residents and members of the business community into active leadership and participation in revitalizing our housing development project. As major stockholders, residents will be involved in the planning, problem solving and action for the neighborhood future. Here's what we have to offer:
New Jersey Statewide Heating Assistance and Referral for Energy Services (New Jersey SHARES) is a non-profit organization charged with a mission to provide assistance to individuals and families living in New Jersey who are in need of temporary help in paying their energy bills.
New Jersey SHARES is the only statewide, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization which provides grants to pay the utility bills of households in need through a statewide network of more than 80 community-based social service agencies. Visit www.njshares.org for more details.

In June of 2002, St. Matthew NIDA joined community leaders, government agencies and other faith-based organizations to address the problem of Diabetes by establishing "The East Orange Diabetes Project." NIDA chose diabetes as a healthcare project because of the high disparity of type 2 diabetes in the African American, Haitian, and black population in the communities of Orange, East Orange and Irvington.
Through collaboration with The Office of Minority and Multicultural Health, The Black Ministers Council, The Department of Health and Senior Services, East Orange and Orange Health Departments, Newark Community Health Centers, Inc., East Orange General Hospital and The East Orange Community and Congregational Health Promoters, Inc. The EODP Has been successful in fulfilling its goal of heightening the awareness of Type 2 diabetes throughout the Essex County Community. Its success has also come about through the following efforts:
- Conducting health education and support group sessions
- Conducting and participating in community events
- Distributing Diabetes information through community outreach
- Administering The American Diabetes Association Risk Test

It's a new law: the New Jersey Safe Haven Infant Protection Act.
Under this law a person may give up an unwanted infant anonymously. As long as the baby has not been abused, the person may do so without fear of arrest or prosecution. The purpose of Safe Haven is to protect unwanted babies from being hurt or killed because they were abandoned.
